From the B&B the Farm of Mulberries you can go to the discovery of the intact nature of the lakes which are at brief distance: Bolsena and Vico. We suggest you a dive into the Lake of Bolsena, (Viterbo, is about thirty km from Castiglione in Teverina, where you can now plunge between wild ducks and almost sedentary cormorants, in search of the secrets and the crevices. This lake is famous for being the biggest in Europe among the volcanic ones and the fifth in Italy for its expanse. It itis on the borders with the Tuscany and the Umbria, at 40 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is situated at 305 meters of the sea level. The lake of Bolsena is situated in a very complex tectonic depression formed by several volcanoes, and by the lakes of Mezzano and Monterosi.
Let’s have a look on the amusement: the fishing amateurs, sailling amateurs and windsurfing amateurs can practice here their hobby, surrounded by a charming and wild panorama and the amateurs of birdwatching will find here their paradise thanks to the vast holding of acquatic birds, specially migratory birds. The waters of the lake of Bolsena are full of fishes: famous eels, already known by the Romain and quoted by Dante in Divine Comedy, besides the perch, of the bar, of the tench, by the roach and by the carp. The lake is known for the phenomenon of the sesses which are fast level variations according to the type of tides. Its Hisbanks are cultivated at East and are afforested at West. The complete excursion of the lake is deeply recommended for the magnificent panorama. You can rent typical boats from those places and study the lake with a particular perspective.
Two small islands are situated here: the Bysantine island, the biggest touristic attraction, with its seven Oratories, the convent of San Giacomo and Cristoforo and its fascinating gardens, summer residence of the pope in different occasions and the island of Martana where you can see the ruins of the fortress in which Teodato in 535 later J.C was made imprison and Queen Amalasunta was murdered (daughter ok king Théodoric, king of the Goths). The lake recently returned interesting archaeological testimonies among which a dugout monossile.

Storicamente si narra che nel 1260 Pietro da Praga un sacerdote boemo, giunto nella città di Orvieto stava vivendo un periodo di profonda crisi religiosa al punto tale da mettere in discussione il mistero della transustanziazione, ( la mutazione del pane e del vino nel corpo e nel sangue di Cristo).
E’ cosi che nel 1263, il sacerdote trovandosi di passaggio a Bolsena, tappa lungo il percorso di un pellegrinaggio intrapreso sulla via Francigena verso Roma, chiese di poter celebrare messa e durante la liturgia nella chiesa di Santa Cristina a Bolsena, le ostie consacrate, sotto gli occhi del sacerdote iniziarono a sanguinare macchiando il Corporale di lino, il pavimento e le pietre dell’altare.
Il sacerdote profondamente colpito e felicemente “frastornato” da questa visione, rivelò l’accaduto Papa Urbano IV che si trovava ad Orvieto.
Il pontefice e la chiesa dichiararono “miracoloso” l’evento e lo stesso Urbano IV ordinò che il Corporale macchiato fosse trasferito ad Orvieto e volle istituire l’anno seguente, la festa del “Corpus Domini” con la celebre Bolla “Transiturus de hoc mundo” datata 1264, (e rilanciata anche dal suo successore Papa Clemente V ) stabilendo così che la festa del Corpus Domini ed altre celebrazioni e riti eucaristici fossero diffusi e celebrati ogni anno in tutto il mondo cristiano.
Le macchie del prodigioso sangue sul pavimento e sulle pietre dell’altare della chiesa di Santa Cristina sono oggetto di venerazione così come il sacro lino macchiato, custodito nella cappella del Corporale del Duomo di Orvieto, (sebbene la costruzione della cattedrale della città umbra non sia dovuta a questo evento miracoloso come per molti anni si è ipotizzato) e portato in processione ed esposto ai fedeli in occasione della festa del Corpus Domini nella città umbra.
